Lowfields In response to our interested reader, we have not been able to find out exactly what is going on, but there is much activity around Filey to repair the damage from this years excellent summer. There still a lot of houses stood empty, waiting for the builders to come and put it all right. It is hardly surprising that there was so much damage up from the new Seadale development, like that at Lowfields, as there was no effective drainage as some lovely developers built houses on the water grasping field, and allegedly bunged up the drains. Sand Burglers If it's not bolted down it will walk won't it. For the full length of the main part of the sea wall in Filey so much sand has 'dissapeared' that all the foundations of the wall are visible. Is it visiting wessies nicking pocket fulls of sand to take home as souvineers, or are the local druggies snorting it thinking that it is a cheap and easily avaliable kind of crack. Smokefree Filey Well that's it, then end of an institution and a way of life. The face of drinking in Filey has changed forever, and for the best if you ask some people. Now that the new smoking ban has come in to effect the towns doors are plastered in signs and new ashtrays adorn the outside walls of our Public Houses. For those that don't smoke the absence of a terrible pong in the morning after a night out is a welcome relief. For them that smoke, the prospect of having to stand outside and have a quick ciggie seems ok now that it's summer (yes, it really is summer). But what will happen in the winter ? This is the question, and we're sure that many will quit rather than stand out in the cold. Will this do any damage to the pub trade ? Well, it shouldn't, if you'd rather stay at home and smoke instead of socialising, then bugger off you miserable twats. At the end of the day the ban is here, and we all have to live with it. A final question, after how long will it be that someone will complain about the gossiping groups stood outside? Smokefree Update Well several months after the end of smoking in Filey pubs, and everywhere else for that matter, the giving uppers have given up giving up, pubs are indeed smoke free, and there is always a large group of people stood outside each pub having a quick puff. Every now and then the pub your in suddenly empties and the non-smokers are all stood there on their own. Probably time for a non-smoker support group for those feeling alone and lonely. Will things change now the winter is coming ? We'll see won't we.... watch this space. Glastonfiley The second annual Starfest took place on the 1st July, this year the weather was not particularly summery, with frequent heavy downpours, but this did little to dampen the spirits of all concerned. Several local bands played, including members from The Codgers, Bandana, Adrian Lee, and Sammi Lee. The day raised a considerable amount of cash for JB, and also for the Macmillan nurses charity in memorian of our good friend, the late Chris Wing. Activities included a bouncy castle...a bit wet, a set of stocks...everyone was wet enough, and a charity auction. The auction was led by Adrial Lee, and raised a good few quid. If anyone has any more pics we'll make a special page. Pls send them to our email.
Our mate Cedric, aka Army Trained, aka Chris Cornwall is making a move and disapearing to sunnier climbs. A good night was had by all in the leaving piss up on the 7th July. Windpower, by Hoss
It has, within the last 20 years, been brought to the attention of the UK, and in fact the whole planet, the need for alternate energy sources. Amongst these wind power has been one of the most newest and resourceful and clean ways of reaping energy from the natural environment. Filey has become foremost, and has for some time, in this power saving technology, its own wind farm generator providing power to the national grid long before anyone else even thought of it. Charlie The Elephant A story recently appeared in the papers, re Charlie, Hoss details the final days and the future of one of Butlins' attractions in a Hosstory special. Charlie The Elephant A good Scout around
For those not privvy to the Filey Mercury, here's a picture that'll make you feel a bit old. The printed quality is a bit crap that's why it doesn't look so good. Looking at Glen we think that he may have been eating all the pies! (ack to the Mercury for the photo). No-Good Samaritan Well there you have it total evidence, if you need it, that it's just not worth helping people. Good old John Arnell, a fixture and fitting of FIley, getting done for leaving his taxi on Station Ave while helping an old dear. It's great when were all being robbed and battered in this partially lawless town. St John Gone ! We note that the St John hall on Mitford Street seems to have been sold. Now taking bets on how long it will be before there is a planning application in for flats ! Gas Show Rooms, by Hoss What was described recently on the Knowhere site by D’mouf regarding the fate of the old ‘Gas Showrooms’ building is what I’ve heard time and time again (plus seen it a few times). Ask anyone, anywhere what will happen to an old disused building in this day and age and you’ll be told exactly the same story. Some years ago, an old disused school burned down in a village near to where I was working. A fight was going on at the time to have the building turned into a community centre for the village people. 3 Months after the fire the building was demolished and several £250,000 houses were built on the site. There was a report made by the local council that the fire was due to an electrical fault. In a supply that hadn’t been cut off? I saw the fire brigade report. The fire had been started in 12 places and an accelerant had been used. The Gas Showrooms building has been derelict for far too long, so the council should be doing something about getting off their arses and making it easier for the vandals to get in and wreck the place. Why should it be turned into something useful for the community when someone on the council can get a nice fat back-hander from some property development contractor for the land? Odd innit? Comment By Filey-Eye Well, the Gas Showrooms has met its grizzly end and is now a patch of wasteland, which it will probably stay as for evermore..... well until planning permission for houses can be arranged. More Houses, by Filey-Eye So, speaking of houses, the next hair brained plan is to build on the field over the road from Filey School. Several hundred houses I hear, that'll be nice for the house prices of those that live on Grange Ave and have a nice view over open fields as far as the eye can see. Well, as its happened planning permission has currently been refused, although it won't be a surprise when it mysteriously gets granted and the whole lot is built upon with many more houses than originally planned. It's ok though, our crumbling infrastructure will be able to take it, especially with all the investment Filey will see in return....ha ha ha ha.... not in our lifetime! Filey is Bloody Cold, by Filey Eye Shiver me timbers, hasn't it been cold in Filey just lately. Old Bruce Smith bragging about his 30 odd degree christmas on Knowhere.... bet he misses the slippery roads and nobbers in 4x4s that do 100mph everwhere in 4ft of snow. Anyhow, we have been sent a nice pic of Filey which shows the cold weather is not all bad, especially as you have a better chance of getting parked. Dixon Discount D&D, by Filey Eye Oh Dear, what a shame Ralph has been done for being in charge of a motor vehicle whilst over the alcohol limit, as we understand. Not new news we know, but big fine, big ban it's worth mentioning don't you think?
We hear that Ralph is over the moon about the free publicity, but who could be behind this attrocity ? The mild mannered janitor ??? Fileys Parking Madness, by d'mouf
Can't find a parking space, well fret no more. Apparently if you have a 4x4 you can just park anywhere you like. On the pavement, on a corner, on yellow lines... or all three if you think that you are really special. E'by gum it's just like summer already, is that anything to do with global warming? Comment By Filey-Eye You can now send your pics to Stuffs new site 'crap-parking' (how on earth did you get that domain name?) and shame those that have no parking skills whatsoever. Well that's the end of the news for now, but finally... Wayno reckons e's are great. Thanks for sharing that with us Wayne.
